Fashion, a word so commonly used in our day to day conversation has many forms and meanings when spoken or thought about.

Take English, Spanish, Mandarin, Afrikaan, Filipino, Australian, Hindi or any of the 6500 languages that are spoken in the world today, each one of them has a word for how we dress, put ourselves up and present in-front of the society. In French ‘mode, in Galician ‘moda’, in Finnish ‘muoti’, in Welsh ‘ffasiwn’, in Mandarin ‘shísháng’ all mean a way or manner in which something occurs or is experienced, expressed, or done.

Fashion has played an important part from ancient times to represent people and their culture.  It also helped people who belonged to a particular country to distinguish people belonging to different classes. It also has helped and is still helping people exchange their cultures as a goodwill and as a symbol for extended hand for peace and friendship.

The term and usage of fashion has changed over time for both good and bad. In older times men and women dressed differently. Colors were chosen differently. Queens and her maids dressed differently. A soldier and their commander dressed differently while going to a war. Men, women, girls and boys dressed differently according to the situation and class for the same occasion. People used to dress as per the unwritten assumptions collectively made by the society. Some bold and brave people cross dressed and were subjected to jester or in worst cases punished. Women who wanted to take part in wars or go on adventures had to particularly dress up like ‘men’. Men who wished to dress up like women were shunned and abandoned by the society. But as time passed, and our society became more generalized and modern, it has been noted that fashion became more fluid. Now more and more people can dress as per their preference, choice, tastes and colors. 

In the next few articles I’ll go through different fashion eras, interesting history stories, reasons for fashion trends, revolutions and fashion wars (YES! wars also changed world fashion) that has shaped our society for what it is today through my words and thoughts.
